Safety Requirements for the Operation of Electric Hoists

When taking over a shift, the electric hoist operator must inspect the brakes, hook, wire rope, and safety devices; any malfunctions discovered must be rectified before operation begins.

An audible signal or alarm must be sounded before starting the equipment; intermittent signals or alarms should also be used when approaching personnel during operation.

Operations must be conducted in accordance with signaling instructions. Emergency stop signals must be executed immediately, regardless of who issues them. The main power supply may only be engaged after confirming that no personnel are on or near the crane; if the power disconnect switch is locked or tagged, the main power may only be engaged after the relevant personnel have removed the lock or tag.

Before engaging the main power supply, all controller handles must be set to the zero position. In the event of a sudden power failure during operation, all controller handles must be returned to the zero position; before resuming work, the crane's functions must be checked for normal operation. Cranes operating outdoors on rails must be anchored upon completion of work.

Operations should generally be suspended and the crane anchored when wind speeds exceed Force 6. For cranes operating in coastal areas—such as portal cranes—operations must be suspended and the crane anchored when wind speeds exceed Force 7. When performing maintenance, the operator must cut off the main power supply and attach a warning sign or apply a lock; any unresolved faults must be reported to the operator taking over the shift.
